The Italian terraced gardens were designed by G. Edwin Bergstrom, a prominent Los Angeles architect and a son-in-law of the Kimberlys. Bergstrom successfully interpreted Mrs. Kimberly's wishes for an Italian garden. Terence Hernstrom, director of gardens and grounds, revives and designs the breath-taking gardens today. The gardens include neverending Mediterranean borders, cascading fountains, lily and koi ponds, multiple terraces, curved stairways and engulfing orange groves - all reminiscent of Renaissance Italy.

The luxuriant gardens and grounds provide an aristocratic setting for important private events. Wedding ceremonies often take place at one end of the main terrace in a semicircular nook where a wisteria-covered arbor makes a classical backdrop. Kimberly Crest provides the perfect setting for an exclusive outdoor event.

Venus Rises Again!

The sounds and patterns of a fountain are magic. For over a century this mythological representation has been the center of attention on the terrace at Kimberly Crest. The Venus Rising from the Sea fountain pre-dated the installation of the Italian gardens in 1909 and originally included statuary of Venus and two trumpeting young Tritons astride dolphins.

The effects of environment, age, and vandalism took their toll on the brittle pot-metal figures. Renovation of the fountain included an exact duplicate of the statuary, complete with the Venus, cast from a stronger, more durable metal, bronze. The fountain bowl was also replaced and new plumbing installed.

Molds from the original cast and sister statue (Haller Fountain, see photo & link at left) were discovered in Port Townsend, Washington. Mark Stevenson, a local Port Townsend artist and member of Carapace Arts, was commissioned to complete the replica. The fountain was delivered and installed October 22, 2002. The original is attributed to the J.L. Mott Iron Foundry of New York, dating from 1875-1919. The artist is unknown.

Thank you to all who particpated in making this dream a reality for Kimberly Crest. A speical thanks to the Kimberly Juniors Alumni who raised the target amount of $50,000 via a very successful fund drive. Major contributors to the fountain fund also include Harriet and Myron Talbert, Julian and Trudy Blakeley, Neal and Carol Baker and family and Teresa L. Goodrich, in addition to more than 200 donors from 16 different states.
